More About Vaishnava Performing Arts
Vaishnava Performing Arts, Inc. is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization dedicated to glorifying Krishna and spreading universal love of God through all aspects of Eastern and Western music, poetry, dance, and theater.
Formation of VPA
Mangalananda and Uttamasloka Dasa (Ron Marinelli), owner of Blue Monsoon Music in Los Angeles, began working on the idea for VPA while touring with the Change of Heart Band in 2001. They met many devotee-musicians who were spread out across the U.S. and Europe, and saw a need to create a cyber community to bring them all together. Plans for a website are underway thanks to financial assistance from Gayatri Dasa (Gerry Snoddy), professional musician and singer/songwriter in Nashville. The website will be one of VPAs many tools to facilitate association among Krishna conscious performing artists.
Function of VPA
We need to engage our emotions in Krishna. In all cultures our deepest feelings are expressed and evoked through the performing artspoetry, music, dance, and theater.
For Eastern Vaishnavas, the performing arts have been dovetailed as part of their spiritual culture for thousands of years, and even today provide a great source entertainment and inspiration. In the same way, Western Vaishnavas need to use their performing arts to glorify Krishna so that these emotional and influential arts become part of their spiritual culture.
Over the past 30 years, the painters and sculptors of the Hare Krishna Movement have come a long way in their Krishna conscious expression through the fine arts. This refinement of skills was made possible by regular encouragement, financial support, and training. VPA is dedicated to providing this same encouragement by assisting performing artists with career guidance, financial support, and training.
